Can I give paracetamol to my dog for pain?

Answered by our veterinary team

**No — never give paracetamol (acetaminophen) to your dog. This is a veterinary emergency if your dog has already consumed it.**

Paracetamol — sold in India under brand names like Crocin, Dolo, Calpol, and Metacin — is highly toxic to dogs. It is one of the most common causes of accidental pet poisoning in Indian households.

Why it's deadly

Dogs lack sufficient amounts of a liver enzyme (glucuronyl transferase) needed to safely metabolise paracetamol. Even a single standard tablet (500mg) can be lethal for a small dog.

Paracetamol damages dogs in two ways: 1. **Liver failure**: The toxic metabolites directly destroy liver cells 2. **Methaemoglobinaemia**: Haemoglobin in red blood cells is converted into a form that cannot carry oxygen, causing the tissues to suffocate

Symptoms of paracetamol toxicity in dogs

- Vomiting and abdominal pain - Lethargy and weakness - Brown or grey discolouration of the gums (a sign of methaemoglobinaemia — emergency) - Facial or paw swelling - Jaundice (yellowing of skin, eyes, gums) - Laboured breathing - Collapse

Symptoms appear within 1–4 hours of ingestion.

If your dog has eaten paracetamol

This is an emergency. Contact your vet or emergency animal clinic immediately. Time is critical — treatment must begin before severe organ damage occurs.

Safe pain relief for dogs

Only use medications specifically prescribed by your vet. Common veterinary pain relief options include Meloxicam, Carprofen, and Tramadol — but dosing must be prescribed based on your dog's weight and health status.
