Why Is My Dog Vomiting Yellow Bile? Causes & When to Act

Dr. Sarah Jenkins, DVM

Omelo Vet · Licensed Veterinarian

Waking up to yellow bile vomit is common for dog owners. It often indicates an empty stomach, but persistent yellow vomiting can signal something more serious.

Yellow bile vomit is one of the most common presentations dog owners search about, and for good reason - it's alarming to wake up to. The good news is that in many cases, it has a relatively benign explanation. The important skill is knowing when it isn't benign.

**Why is the vomit yellow?**

Bile is produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It's released into the small intestine (duodenum) to aid fat digestion. The yellow or green-yellow colour comes from bilirubin and biliverdin - pigments in bile.

When a dog has an empty stomach - particularly first thing in the morning after a long overnight fast - stomach acid and refluxed bile can irritate the stomach lining, triggering vomiting of this yellow fluid. The technical term is bilious vomiting syndrome.

**Bilious Vomiting Syndrome (BVS)**

BVS is characterised by:

  • Vomiting first thing in the morning or late at night (after an extended fast)
  • Yellow or green-yellow bile, sometimes with foam
  • Small amount of vomit
  • Dog appears otherwise well: normal appetite, behaviour, and bowel movements

BVS often responds simply to changing the feeding schedule. Feeding a small meal late at night (before bed) and/or first thing in the morning reduces the overnight fasting period and prevents bile accumulation.

**When yellow vomiting is more serious**

Investigate further if vomiting is:

  • Repeated: More than 2–3 times in 24 hours
  • Accompanied by other symptoms: Lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, or bloating
  • Containing blood: (red blood or coffee-ground material) - emergency
  • Projectile: Forceful, projectile vomiting suggests gastric outflow obstruction
  • In a puppy: Puppies dehydrate and deteriorate quickly
  • In a senior dog: Where systemic disease is more likely

**Other conditions causing yellow vomiting**:

  • Pancreatitis: Inflammation of the pancreas - often caused by high-fat meals. Signs include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, and abdominal pain. Can be life-threatening in severe cases.
  • Intestinal obstruction: A foreign body blocking the intestine causes repeated vomiting. Emergency requiring surgery.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease: Chronic inflammation with recurrent episodes.
  • Liver disease: Impaired bile processing.
  • Addison's disease (hypoadrenocorticism): Vomiting is a common presenting sign - often occurs during stressful events.
