Can my dog eat granola bars?
Answered by our veterinary team
The short answer: probably not safely. While plain oats in small amounts are harmless to dogs, the vast majority of commercially produced granola bars contain at least one ingredient that is toxic or harmful:
Xylitol
This sugar substitute is found in many 'healthy' or 'sugar-free' granola bars and is extremely toxic to dogs. Even a small amount triggers a massive insulin release causing hypoglycaemia, and larger amounts cause acute liver failure. Always check for xylitol on the label.
Raisins and dried grapes
Even a few raisins can cause irreversible kidney failure in dogs. The exact toxic mechanism is unknown, making there no truly 'safe' amount.
Chocolate chips
Dark chocolate especially is toxic due to theobromine content.
Macadamia nuts
Cause weakness, tremors, vomiting, and fever in dogs.
High sugar and fat content
Even 'safe' granola bars are often high in sugar and fat, which can trigger pancreatitis in dogs - a painful and potentially serious condition.
The bottom line: Never share granola bars without first reading the full ingredient list. When in doubt, offer a dog-safe treat instead.
