Can dogs eat mango?

VET

Answered by our veterinary team

Yes, mango is safe for dogs in moderation, but there are important precautions to follow:

What's safe

The ripe flesh of mango is non-toxic to dogs and contains vitamins A, B6, C, and E, as well as fibre. A few small cubes as an occasional treat is fine for most healthy adult dogs.

What to remove

- **The skin**: Mango skin is difficult for dogs to digest and can cause stomach upset. It also contains urushiol — the same compound found in poison ivy — which can cause mild reactions in sensitive dogs. - **The seed/pit**: This is the biggest hazard. The mango seed is a serious choking risk and can cause intestinal blockage if swallowed. It also contains small amounts of cyanide, though the risk of toxicity from a single seed is low. Still, never let your dog chew on it.

Portion guidance

Mango is high in natural sugar. Too much can cause loose stools or digestive upset, and regular overconsumption can contribute to weight gain — especially in dogs with diabetes or obesity. A few pieces once or twice a week is appropriate.

Signs to watch for

If your dog ate mango skin or seed, watch for vomiting, diarrhoea, choking, or abdominal discomfort. Contact your vet if any of these occur.
