Can I feed my dog roti or chapati?

VET

Answered by our veterinary team

Plain wheat roti or chapati is not toxic to dogs, but it isn't a suitable regular food either. Here's what you need to know:

Plain roti (no salt, spices, or ghee)

A small piece occasionally is unlikely to cause harm in a healthy dog without wheat sensitivity. However, it's essentially empty calories — high in carbohydrates, low in protein, and lacking the nutrients dogs need.

Why it's not recommended regularly

- Dogs thrive on high-protein, moderate-fat diets. Roti is carbohydrate-heavy and can cause weight gain if given routinely. - Many Indian rotis are made with salt and sometimes ghee — both are problematic in excess. Salt can cause sodium toxicity in large amounts; ghee contributes to high fat intake and pancreatitis risk. - Wheat gluten sensitivity exists in some dogs (though true coeliac disease is rare in dogs). Signs include chronic diarrhoea, vomiting, itchy skin, and poor coat condition.

What about roti with dal, sabzi, or masala?

Absolutely not. Most Indian dishes contain onion, garlic, salt, and spices — all harmful to dogs. Even small amounts of onion and garlic consumed regularly cause cumulative red blood cell damage.

Bottom line

If your dog begs for roti, a small plain piece occasionally won't hurt most dogs. But their core meals should be nutritionally balanced dog food, not table scraps.
