Can dogs eat paneer?
Answered by our veterinary team
Plain paneer (Indian cottage cheese) is not toxic to dogs, but there are important caveats:
When it's okay
A small piece of unsalted, unflavoured paneer is generally safe for most dogs as an occasional treat. It's a source of protein and calcium.
Why moderation matters
- **Fat content**: Paneer is high in fat. Regular consumption or large amounts increase the risk of pancreatitis — inflammation of the pancreas that causes severe vomiting, abdominal pain, and can be life-threatening. - **Lactose**: Some dogs are lactose intolerant. Paneer contains less lactose than milk (it's a fresh cheese), but sensitive dogs may still experience loose stools, bloating, or gas. - **Salt**: Commercial paneer often contains added salt. Excess sodium is harmful to dogs.
What to avoid
Paneer dishes cooked with onion, garlic, masala, or oil are not safe for dogs — the seasoning is the problem more than the paneer itself.
Signs of trouble
If your dog has diarrhoea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort after eating paneer, they may be lactose intolerant. Speak to your vet about appropriate dairy-free alternatives.
