Is turmeric (haldi) safe for dogs?

Reviewed by Dr. Ashim Sarkar

BVSc & AH · Licensed Veterinarian · Omelo Vet

Turmeric (haldi) is one of the few Indian spices that is generally safe for dogs in small, plain amounts — and may even have health benefits. Here's the full picture:

Potential benefits

Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has documented anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and joint-supportive properties in research settings. Some veterinarians recommend it as a supplement, particularly for dogs with arthritis.

Safe use

A small pinch of plain turmeric powder (under ¼ teaspoon for a medium dog) mixed into food occasionally is generally well tolerated. Some vets suggest combining it with a small amount of black pepper and coconut oil to improve absorption.

What to avoid

- **Turmeric in cooked Indian food**: Absolutely not. Dishes containing turmeric also typically contain onion, garlic, salt, oil, and other spices that are harmful to dogs. - **Large amounts**: High doses of turmeric can cause digestive upset, nausea, and diarrhoea. It also has mild blood-thinning properties — avoid before surgery. - **Turmeric supplements formulated for humans**: These may contain other additives or doses inappropriate for dogs.

Important

If you want to use turmeric therapeutically for a dog with a health condition, consult your vet first to get the correct dose and ensure it's appropriate for your dog's specific situation.
